Troy Martin is a BMX racer from the Papakura BMX club. He races in the 9 year boys age group. Troy has been racing for quite some time - since he was about 4.

Troy has a heart condition - called a "conductive heart condition". This means that his heart "races like a rocket" and he needs medication every day. We're really pleased that Troy doesn't let this get in the way of his BMX racing, and BMX must help keep him fit and healthy.

Troy and his family are involved with Heart Children NZ, which is the official sponsor of the 2006 Wattyl Lake Taupo Challenge. This is the 160km round Taupo ride on 25 November. Troy has been selected to be one of 30 heart kids to complete the last 5kms of the ride, and he will be doing that with his mum Dianne.

Inaugural Dunedin BMX Primary School Challenge

5 November 2006

In spite of the weather, 45 enthusiastic riders from six schools joined a team of willing volunteers to participate in the first challenge of its type held in Dunedin.

Riders competed according to their age on the day. Three rounds of racing were held prior to the lunchbreak, during which competitors were treated to a great demo race from some of the club's more experienced riders. This was also followed by a demonstration of the cycling ability of some parents. Two rounds of racing followed the break, and then it was on to prizegiving and the business end of the day.

At the end of the day the children (and some of the parents) were all thoroughly wet, filthy and exhausted, but grinning from ear to ear with a sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm. Thankfully the weather held off for the prizegiving, where Fairfield took out third place and Macandrew Bay beat Musselburgh by a mere 0.1 of a point to take the trophy and have the honour of being the first team to have their name engraved on it.

Thanks to all involved for a successful day, and here's to making next year even bigger and better !! Hopefully next year more schools will make the effort to allow their kids to take part.

Well, a very successful day at the track today !!!

With 44 riders competing there was spirited racing, a few crashes and overall an enjoyable day for all concerned. The shop did a roaring trade and the BBQ sold out, which is all good news for club funds. (My apologies for forgetting the boiling water for the coffee and the Milo)

Thanks to all riders for attending and supporting our club, especially those who made the trip from other clubs. Was great to see some new riders present ... hopefully we will see you again in the future.

A quick reminder to all of you ... entries for the Schools Challenge close at the end of this week. Please follow this up with your school if you haven't already done so, so that we can make this another hugely successful day !!!

Tri Series cancelled ...

Unfortunately, due to the lack of entries, this weekend's Tri Series has been cancelled.

Dunedin has decided, however, to open the track for racing on Monday 23 October anyway.

Check in will be from 11.00 - 11.30am, with racing starting at midday.

Hot shot format.

Registration $3 on the day.

BBQ and shop will be operating.
